The footer is reserved to highlight what may have gone unnoticed on the web or serves to add complementary links or of interest to the visitor. It can be both business or brand information, social media profiles, newsletter subscriptions and a wide range of possibilities.

Most importantly, in the approach, which focuses on differentiating yourself at first glance from the rest of the page. The differentiating character is fundamental, with the aim of differentiating itself from the rest of the content, since its nature is oriented to offer something additional and that can be interesting.

However, that it is an additional element is not synonymous with turning it into a catch-all. The information must be important and does not have to be filled in to the point of saturating the footer. Avoid anything that may be confusing or that does not throw anything of interest to the visitor.

Today it is considered an essential element on the web.

What should the footer include?

The ideal is to put only the most important. We should not fill the footer with elements that do not contribute anything or confuse the user. Although it is a widespread practice, you should avoid including elements such as the site map or images or putting too much text.

As for the design of the footer, you should use colors that make it stand out but do not clash with the colors of the web style guide. It is the central point in which the contact information of the company must be put so that the potential client has no excuse to contact or to know a little more about the brand.

Mistakes to avoid in the Footer

Once we have seen the importance of the footer within the web design, we only have to point out the errors to start optimizing the footers and thus improve the effectiveness of the websites.

  • Not knowing how to choose. While it is true that a large amount of information can be included, it must be taken into account that the elements of the footer must be prioritized. For this it is essential to know both the brand and the marketing strategy.
  • Use the footer as SEO. Links don’t add value to SEO. Establishing a bunch of links in the footer not only negatively affects the user experience and navigability, but can cause a penalty if you consider that you focus on a specific keyword.
  • Don’t be responsive. It must be adapted to the various screens. Once the footer of the web is designed, you have to see how it will be seen on the different devices. Elements must not be static. Floating footers or those hidden in buttons can be a good option for many websites.
