Definition:

A Favicon is the small 16-by-16-pixel images you see next to some URLs in your browser’s address bar. Usually those images are the logos of the companies or pages.

What is the Favicon for?

Although it seems of little use, favicons are useful especially when creating branding, since they reinforce the brand of the website, since the favicon logo is associated with the page being visited.
