Definition:
Deep linking is the practice of directing a person to specific content, a screen or a state within a website or application instead of taking them to the home page or main screen. The destination may be a product page, article, conversation, offer or any other identifiable location.
On the web, a deep link is commonly a hyperlink to a particular internal URL. In an application, it requires the operating system and the app itself to recognise the path or URI and determine which screen to open. The result depends on the platform, whether the application is installed and the fallback configured when the destination cannot be opened.
Scope of Deep Linking
The concept originated on the web to distinguish links to internal pages from links that only led to a site’s home page. That distinction remains valid, although linking to particular content is now part of normal web operation.
A deep URL may contain a path, parameters or a fragment that identifies a particular section. To be useful, the destination needs to be stable, accessible and consistent with what the link promises. If it depends on a session, has expired or requires permission, the user may encounter an error or a screen other than the expected one.
Deep linking is not synonymous with internal linking. A deep link describes the specific destination; internal linking describes how pages on the same site are connected to support navigation, crawling and the distribution of context.
Deep Linking in applications
Mobile applications can recognise different link types. Each determines how the destination is identified, which checks the system performs and what happens when the app is unavailable:
- Custom schemes: These use proprietary addresses, such as app://product/123, to open a route registered by the application. They are flexible but may create conflicts if another app claims the same scheme.
- Android App Links: These use HTTPS URLs associated and verified between a domain and an Android application. If the association and route are valid, the system can open the app content directly.
- iOS universal links: These relate HTTPS URLs to an iOS application through an association between the site and the app. When opening the app is not appropriate, the URL can continue on the web.
- Deferred deep links: These preserve the intended destination when the application is not installed and attempt to open the corresponding content after installation. Their operation depends on the platform, provider, attribution method and privacy restrictions.
The Android deep link documentation and Apple’s universal link documentation describe different configurations. A link that works on one platform is not automatically validated on the other.
Uses of Deep Linking
Deep links reduce the number of steps between a click and the expected content. They can serve different purposes across marketing, product and communication:
- Campaigns: Direct people from advertisements, email, social media or QR codes to a page or screen related to the message.
- Notifications: Open the order, conversation, news item or function mentioned by an alert instead of launching the application without context.
- Continuity: Connect a web URL with equivalent app content and provide a web fallback when required.
- Measurement: Associate clicks, opens and subsequent actions with a campaign or destination when the instrumentation and measurement basis allow it.
These applications may reduce friction, but they do not guarantee longer use, engagement, downloads or conversions. Their effect needs to be assessed according to the destination, link context, technical operation and observed behaviour.
Relationship with SEO
On a website, links to internal pages can help discover content and communicate relationships between pages when they are crawlable and belong to a coherent architecture. That effect comes from linking and URL accessibility, not from labelling a hyperlink as a deep link.
In applications, deep links connect a web URL to an equivalent screen. Google explains in its app deep link documentation that this association does not change how Search indexes and ranks web content: it uses the web page for those functions and may open the installed app as the result’s destination.
Deep linking can be related to ASO positioning and acquisition or re-engagement campaigns, but it performs a different function. ASO seeks to improve the visibility and conversion of a store listing; the deep link determines which content is accessed after the click.
Deep Linking verification
The quality of a deep link depends on both its route and the conditions in which it opens. Verification needs to cover several elements:
- Destination: The screen or page needs to exist, correspond to the message and retain a comprehensible alternative if it changes or disappears.
- Compatibility: Testing needs to cover installed and uninstalled applications, operating system versions, browsers and fallback web routes.
- Association and security: Verified links need to relate the domain and application correctly; custom schemes require particular attention to conflicts and unintended openings.
- Measurement and privacy: Parameters, identifiers and attribution providers need to be limited to a legitimate purpose and respect consent and each platform’s restrictions.
Changes to routes, domains, screens or association rules can break links that have already been distributed. Maintenance therefore includes testing destinations, reviewing fallbacks and observing errors without assuming that a recorded click confirms the correct content was opened.
