RankBrain is an artificial intelligence system used by Google that helps understand how words relate to concepts and contributes to ranking search results.
It can identify relevant content even when it does not contain exactly all the words in the query. It is one of the systems that make up the search engine, not the name of its entire technology or a tool that website owners can configure.

Origins of RankBrain
Google introduced RankBrain in 2015. It was its first deep learning system deployed in Search and marked an advance in interpreting relationships between language and concepts.
Its introduction made it possible to move beyond literal word matching. Someone may describe something without knowing its exact name; relating that description to the corresponding concept helps find relevant information.
The evolution of the search engine has incorporated other artificial intelligence systems. This does not mean that each new technology automatically replaces earlier ones: they can perform complementary functions.
How RankBrain works
RankBrain uses machine learning to relate the words in a search to concepts. This understanding helps assess which results can answer the query and in what order to display them.
In its explanation of AI in Search, Google uses a query about the consumer at the highest level of a food chain. Relating those words to the concept of an apex predator makes it possible to find information even when the user has not used that term.
Its function is not limited to replacing words with synonyms. It involves recognising relationships that help interpret the meaning of a search.
Google does not publish a complete formula for reproducing RankBrain’s decisions. It should therefore not be described as a system that calculates positions directly from the CTR, bounce rate or dwell time observed by a website owner.
Differences between RankBrain, BERT and other systems
The search engine uses technologies related to language understanding, but their names are not interchangeable:
- RankBrain: helps relate words to concepts and contributes to ranking relevant results.
- BERT: helps understand how combinations of words express meanings and intentions, taking their context into account.
- Neural matching: relates representations of concepts present in queries and pages.
These systems form part of what is commonly called the Google algorithm. They work alongside other technologies, such as those dedicated to link analysis or spam detection.
RankBrain is not a feature that writes AI-generated answers either. Its role as described by Google focuses on understanding relationships between words and concepts and helping rank results.
What RankBrain means for SEO
RankBrain helps explain why a page can appear in search results without repeating the entire query verbatim. This does not diminish the importance of precise names and descriptive titles, but it does discourage reducing content to a succession of keywords.
The editorial application is to explain the topic, its relationships and the questions it answers clearly. Artificially introducing variants or synonyms does not demonstrate better coverage or guarantee positions.
There is no special RankBrain configuration for a website or public score for measuring its assessment of each page. Nor can a rise or fall be attributed exclusively to this system based on general Search Console data.
The priority remains to provide useful, understandable information, make content accessible and evaluate results without turning hypotheses about the search engine into confirmed rules.
