What is Ahrefs

Definition:

Ahrefs logo in corporate turquoise Ahrefs is a digital marketing platform for analyzing websites, keywords, backlinks, content, rankings, and brand visibility across search engines and artificial intelligence systems. Its tools combine a proprietary web crawler and databases with projects configured by each user.

Origin and evolution of Ahrefs

Ahrefs started in 2011 as a paid service built around a backlink index created by Dmitry Gerasimenko. Its first product focused on exploring links between pages and domains. The company later expanded its crawling technology and databases to cover keywords, estimated organic traffic, content, advertising, and technical issues.

The platform is headquartered in Singapore and has developed without external funding. Although it remains closely associated with SEO, Ahrefs now presents itself as a marketing platform focused on digital visibility across search engines, AI assistants, and other discovery sources.

How Ahrefs collects and presents data

Ahrefs uses a proprietary crawler to discover pages and links, together with keyword and search result indexes. It uses these sources to calculate metrics for links, rankings, traffic potential, competition, and domain trends. User projects add configured tracking, recurring audits, and supported integrations.

Many values are proprietary estimates. Estimated organic traffic is calculated from positions, search volumes, and click models; it does not represent a website’s actual sessions. Similarly, Domain Rating and URL Rating describe aspects of a backlink profile under the Ahrefs methodology, but they are not Google ranking factors.

Main Ahrefs tools

Ahrefs groups its capabilities into several products. Availability and limits depend on the selected plan, credits, and active add-ons.

  • Site Explorer: analyzes estimated organic and paid traffic, backlinks, pages, keywords, and competitors for a domain or URL.
  • Keywords Explorer: discovers queries and reports volume, difficulty, intent, traffic potential, trends, and search results.
  • Site Audit: crawls a site to identify technical and on-page issues involving indexability, links, duplicates, performance, and markup.
  • Rank Tracker: monitors keyword positions by device and location, including SERP features such as AI Overviews.
  • Content Explorer: finds content by topic and supports research into traffic, links, mentions, and prospecting opportunities.
  • Brand Radar: measures brand mentions, citations, topics, and visibility in AI answers and other supported platforms.
  • AI Content Helper: supports search intent and topical coverage research for writing or optimizing content.
  • Web Analytics: records website visits through an analytics product that is separate from Site Explorer estimates.

Search and artificial intelligence visibility

Brand Radar can track brand presence through custom prompts and an index based on queries modeled by Ahrefs. Its reports cover systems such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot, although exact coverage can vary by product and over time.

A mention means that an answer names the brand; a citation identifies a linked or used source; an estimated visit approximates possible traffic; and an analytics session records measured website activity. These metrics are not equivalent. Results depend on the prompt sample, location, index refresh, and the variability of each model.

Uses and limitations of Ahrefs

Ahrefs can be used to research markets, compare competitors, conduct keyword research, review a backlink profile, audit websites, and monitor campaigns. It can also identify content, sources, and topics associated with a brand’s presence in AI answers.

Its metrics help teams prioritize opportunities and compare trends within the same methodology, but they do not guarantee rankings, mentions, links, or conversions. They should be compared with Search Console, web analytics, business data, and qualitative review. Current features and limits are available on the official Ahrefs website.
