What is Perplexity

Perplexity Definition:

Perplexity is an AI search service that combines consulting sources with generating natural-language answers. It allows users to ask questions, consult reference links and continue their research through follow-up questions.

Its approach is to present an explanation drawn from the information found, rather than just a list of pages. Citations allow users to check the answer, but do not guarantee that all its claims are correct.

Origins and approach of Perplexity

Perplexity emerged in 2022 as a service focused on answering questions through language models and information retrieval. It subsequently expanded its features to work with documents, organise research and offer different ways to access the service.

It combines the capabilities of a search engine with those of a conversational assistant. Search locates relevant materials; the model interprets those materials and writes an answer.

Perplexity is the service that coordinates these functions, not the name of a single language model. The available models and options can change depending on the mode used.

Perplexity also offers Comet, a browser with assistance features, and Computer, an environment designed to carry out tasks and workflows using tools. These are not alternative names for the search service or a language model: they are products with different functions within Perplexity’s offering.

How conversational search works

The user enters a question and can add conditions, such as a country, a time period or the type of information needed. The service uses the query and the available context to search for sources and prepare an answer.

Generative AI allows the information to be synthesised into an explanation that may combine different documents. This synthesis is not the same as reproducing exactly what a single page says.

Users can then ask follow-up questions to expand on a point, compare alternatives or clarify the scope. Continuing the conversation helps maintain continuity, although it does not ensure that the system correctly interprets every earlier detail.

Web access makes it possible to find information published after the model was trained. However, searching the internet does not guarantee finding the most recent information: the sources located may be outdated, incomplete or refer to a different context.

How to interpret citations and sources

Search answers include references that allow users to open the pages used. Their value lies in making verification easier and providing a way to explore the subject further.

A citation alone does not demonstrate that the source supports the exact claim it appears alongside. The system may misinterpret a fact, omit a condition or combine information from different documents.

When checking an answer, it is useful to review the following aspects:

  • Correspondence: check that the source actually contains the information attributed to it.
  • Authorship: identify who publishes the information and what knowledge they have of the subject.
  • Date and scope: check the period, territory or situation to which it refers.
  • Origin of the evidence: distinguish a primary document from a page summarising material published elsewhere.

Several pages repeating the same news story do not necessarily constitute several independent confirmations. Where possible, it is worth tracing the information back to the original study, announcement or document.

Working with files and research

As well as searching the web, Perplexity allows users to work with compatible files and ask questions about their contents. This can help locate information, summarise documents or compare materials supplied by the user.

Feature availability and limits depend on the plan and mode used. Users should not assume that all formats are supported or that a lengthy file is always processed in its entirety.

Research mode develops broad queries through multiple searches, consultation of sources and a subsequent synthesis.

Projects, the evolution of Spaces, brings together tasks, files and shared context to organise ongoing work in Computer. It allows users to manage and collaborate on that work, depending on the available features.

These capabilities can support a document review, but do not turn the result into exhaustive research. It remains necessary to check which sources have been included and which may have been left out.

Differences from a search engine and a chatbot

The main difference lies in how the query is presented and developed. In link-focused search, users open different pages and build their own interpretation. Perplexity adds a generated answer that brings information together and allows the process to continue through conversation.

A chatbot can answer using its training knowledge, the context provided or external tools. Perplexity places search and references at the centre of its approach, although other assistants can also incorporate these functions.

These are therefore not entirely separate categories. What matters is checking whether an answer used external sources, what those sources are and how they relate to its claims.

Uses and limitations

Perplexity can help explore a topic, locate documentation and prepare an initial comparison of information. In marketing, it can support research into an industry or the search for sources for a piece of content.

Its answer should be treated as working material. It may contain errors, insufficient references or conclusions that do not follow from the documents consulted. It does not replace editorial review before publication.

For a website, appearing as a source offers potential exposure, not a guarantee of visits or business enquiries. A mention, a link and a visit are different outcomes and should be assessed separately.
