
An AI Overview is an AI-generated summary that Google may display in its search results to answer a query. It combines information and provides links that allow users to explore or verify the response.
Google calls this feature AI Overviews, in the plural, and uses the name Vistas creadas con IA in Spanish. It is part of the search engine: it is not a standalone application and does not appear for every search.

Origins of AI Overviews
AI Overviews originated from Search Generative Experience, or SGE, the experimental generative search experience Google introduced in 2023.
In May 2024, AI Overviews began rolling out to the general public in the United States. It was subsequently expanded to other countries and languages.
This development added AI-generated answers to search, alongside the links and other elements already included in its results.
How an AI Overview works
Google combines artificial intelligence models with its search systems to develop an answer to a query. The result may bring together information from different sources, rather than simply reproducing an extract from one page.
To develop the response, the system may run several related searches covering different aspects of the topic. This technique helps it find complementary information and select links for further exploration.
The summary is integrated into the search engine results page, where it can coexist with traditional results, images and other formats. Whether it appears depends on the query and Google’s systems assessing its usefulness.
The associated links allow users to consult reference pages. A source being linked does not mean that it supports every statement in the summary: verifying a specific fact requires reviewing the relevant content.
Differences from featured snippets and AI Mode
Google offers different ways to answer questions within search. Although they may appear similar, they serve different purposes:
- AI Overview: generates a synthesis that can combine information from several sources and display related links.
- Featured snippet: presents a selected extract from a page, which may take the form of a paragraph, list or table.
- AI Mode: provides a search experience designed to explore more complex questions and continue through follow-up queries.
AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques. They therefore do not necessarily produce the same answer or display the same sources for a similar query.
What it means for SEO
An AI Overview adds another way to find information and access a website. A page may gain visibility as a linked source, while other queries may be resolved without the user needing to leave Google.
This can change how clicks are distributed, but it does not mean that every traffic decline can automatically be attributed to AI answers. Rankings, search demand, content changes and other elements of the results must also be reviewed.
To appear as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in search. Meeting these conditions makes a page eligible, but does not guarantee selection.
Google’s requirements for AI features retain the fundamentals of SEO: helpful and reliable content, crawl access, internal links and a good page experience. They do not require special markup or an additional file specifically for AI Overviews.
How to interpret its visibility and limitations
It is important to distinguish three situations: a website appearing as a link, receiving a click, and that visit producing a useful outcome. These are different events and should be assessed separately.
Google includes the performance of links in its AI features in the overall Web search data in Search Console. Therefore, an aggregate change in impressions or clicks does not, on its own, demonstrate the effect of AI Overviews.
Checks of search results also depend on the query, timing and search context. A single screenshot does not confirm a stable presence.
Like other generative systems, AI Overviews can produce errors, omit nuances or combine information incorrectly. Its links help users explore and verify the response; they do not automatically guarantee accuracy.
