Definition:
Grok is a family of artificial intelligence models developed by xAI and the name of its conversational assistant. It can answer questions, write text, analyze files and help with programming tasks. The service also incorporates information search, voice conversations, and image and video generation through specialized components.
The assistant provides the interface and tools used to work; the models process instructions and generate results. The available features therefore depend on the model used as well as the application, enabled tools and access conditions.

Origin and evolution of Grok
Grok was introduced in November 2023 by xAI, a company founded by Elon Musk. Its name comes from the verb coined by Robert A. Heinlein in the novel Stranger in a Strange Land, associated with understanding something deeply.
Its initial presentation emphasized its relationship with X and a response style that could include humor. These characteristics do not, by themselves, define its technical capabilities or guarantee the accuracy of its answers.
The product evolved from the conversational assistant into a set of models and services for text, programming, images, video and voice. Access is not limited to X either: it has its own website, mobile applications and an API for developers.
Models and the conversational assistant
The name Grok can refer to the service a person uses or to a model integrated into another application. This distinction explains why two products based on Grok can offer different features.
Grok 4.6 accepts text and image inputs and generates text responses. It incorporates reasoning, function calling and structured outputs, which are useful for tasks requiring a defined format.
Image and video generation is handled by models in the Grok Imagine family. Audio features use dedicated voice services. Having all these capabilities in one application does not mean that a single model performs every operation.
Versions also differ in context capacity, supported modalities and compatible tools. A text model’s version number should not automatically be applied to image or voice products.
Searching the web and X
Grok can incorporate recent information through search tools. Web search allows it to consult external sources, while X Search can locate posts, users and conversations on X.
This access differs from knowledge acquired during training. A model does not automatically know about events beyond its training data: it needs to receive that information as context or retrieve it through tools.
In the API, search tools must be enabled for them to participate in a request. The existence of that capability does not mean that every response includes an internet search.
Retrieved sources can provide links and citations that allow the origin of information to be examined. However, finding a recent post does not establish that its content is correct or that it represents a widely held opinion.
Features of the Grok service
The assistant brings together different forms of interaction. Its features include the following:
- Conversation and writing: answering questions, developing ideas, and creating or transforming text.
- File analysis: extracting information and summarizing materials such as documents, spreadsheets, images or code.
- Programming assistance: explaining code, proposing changes and analyzing technical problems.
- Audiovisual creation: generating or editing images and creating videos through Grok Imagine.
- Voice interaction: holding spoken conversations and using audio-processing capabilities.
- Service connections: accessing information from compatible applications when their connectors and permissions have been configured.
These features can be combined. For example, analyzing a spreadsheet and writing a summary requires interpreting the file and presenting its results, while checking current figures may add an external search.
Access and API integration
Grok is available at grok.com and in iOS and Android applications, as well as through its integration with X. The service offers access options with different limits and features; an assistant subscription and API usage are separate routes.
The xAI API allows models to be integrated into custom applications. The developer selects the model, provides instructions and context, and configures the tools needed.
Function calling allows the model to request an operation from the application integrating it. Execution depends on that application’s code and permissions: generating a tool request does not, by itself, grant access to an external system.
The API also supports structured responses, making it easier to receive information in a defined format. This allows results to be integrated into software processes without relying exclusively on interpreting a paragraph of free-form text.
Difference between Grok and Grokbot
Grokbot, officially named Grok Bot, organizes persistent agents that perform work on a cloud computer. It includes conversations, files, tools and routines associated with those agents.
Grok refers to the assistant and the model family; Grok Bot adds an ongoing organization of work and an execution environment. They are related concepts, but they are not interchangeable.
It is also useful to distinguish conversational context from model training. An instruction or correction can guide subsequent responses without modifying the model’s parameters. The claim that every conversation automatically improves the model confuses different mechanisms.
