It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and metadata, commonly uses the
.webp
extension, and has the MIME type
image/webp
.

A WebP image stores a grid of pixels, so its quality and sharpness depend on resolution and encoding settings. The format can replace JPG, PNG, or GIF in many cases, but the result should be assessed according to the content rather than the file extension alone.

How WebP Works

The file uses a RIFF container organized into identifiable chunks. Depending on the selected mode, visual data is encoded with VP8 for lossy compression or VP8L for lossless compression. The extended format can include transparency, animation, color profiles, and metadata.

In lossy compression, the encoder predicts pixel blocks from nearby areas and mainly stores the differences. In lossless mode, it uses transforms, references to previously seen fragments, and palettes when appropriate to reconstruct the image exactly.

The WebP specification describes the container structure and its bitstreams. The extension alone does not determine quality: two WebP files created from the same source may have very different sizes and artifacts because of their encoding parameters.

Compression Modes

WebP provides several modes that should be chosen according to the image and its purpose. The main options are:

Lossy: Discards information to reduce size and often suits photographs.

Lossless: Reconstructs the original pixels and suits graphics or screenshots that require exact fidelity.

Near-lossless: Applies limited preprocessing before lossless encoding to produce smaller files.

Alpha quality: Certain tools can adjust transparency compression separately.

Lossless compression does not guarantee that WebP will always be smaller than every alternative. Efficiency changes with noise, palette, dimensions, and settings. File size should therefore be compared with perceived quality, preferably using the project’s real images.

WebP Transparency

The format can store an alpha channel for transparent or semitransparent pixels. This capability is available in lossless images and can also be combined with lossy color data, which is an important difference from JPG.

Transparency makes WebP useful for cutout products, interface elements, and compositions placed over changing backgrounds. Edges, gradients, and halos should still be reviewed after conversion because aggressive color compression can affect areas close to the outline.

WebP Animation

A WebP file can contain multiple frames, their durations, a background color, and rules for blending or replacing them. It also supports transparent frames and can combine lossy and lossless compression within an animation.

This option may reduce size compared with an equivalent GIF and avoids its limit of 256 colors per frame. For long sequences, sound, or playback controls, however, a video format is usually more suitable than an animated image.

Comparison With Other Formats

WebP does not automatically replace every format. The choice depends on content, later editing, required compatibility, and encoding results. The common differences are:

JPG: It is a widespread lossy option for photographs but does not support transparency or animation.

PNG: It preserves pixels losslessly and supports transparency; WebP may be smaller, although each image should be tested.

SVG: It describes scalable vector graphics and is usually more suitable for icons, logos, or simple geometry.

AVIF: It is another modern raster format that may achieve greater compression and support higher color depth, but has different encoding costs and compatibility history.

The source format should also be retained when further editing, archiving, or exporting is required. Repeated conversion between lossy formats accumulates degradation; producing every variant from a master source avoids that problem.

WebP Optimization

An effective strategy does not convert every image with the same setting. To improve WPO, quality, size, and processing cost must be balanced. Recommended optimization steps include:

Adjust dimensions: Do not serve more pixels than the display area requires.

Create variants: Use
srcset
and
sizes
to adapt downloads to the device.

Compare settings: Test different quality levels on photographs, graphics, and transparency.

Remove metadata: Strip EXIF or XMP when it is not needed for the intended use.

Define fallback: Use
<picture>
when the audience or tool requires another option.

Modern browsers provide broad support, but a publishing chain also includes editors, content management systems, CDNs, applications, and bots. End-to-end compatibility should be checked across that path. After publishing, measure transferred size, visible quality, and metrics such as LCP on pages where the image plays an important role.

WebP is an image format with lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation.
