It acts as a marketplace connecting publishers’ inventory with advertisers’ demand, usually through intermediary platforms.

Inventory is the set of available opportunities to display ads on websites, apps or other digital environments. The Ad Exchange facilitates the transaction; it does not create the ads and does not necessarily own the advertising space.

How an Ad Exchange works

In an auction-based transaction, the process begins when an opportunity to display an ad arises. Although different technologies are involved, it can be summarised in these steps:

An advertising opportunity is offered. The publisher’s system communicates that space is available and provides information about it, such as its format and context.

Buyers assess the opportunity. Buying platforms check whether it matches their campaigns and decide whether to submit a bid.

The auction takes place. The system compares eligible bids, taking account of the rules, floor prices and seller restrictions.

The ad is selected and served. The winning bid can fill the space if the delivery conditions are met.

This exchange happens within a very short interval. The information available depends on the integration, permissions and applicable privacy conditions.

An example of an advertising impression

A person opens an article about hiking in a digital magazine. The page has space for an ad and offers it to buyers through its advertising infrastructure.

A sports equipment retailer and a travel company might be interested in this opportunity. Their buying platforms assess the context, format, budget and campaign criteria before bidding.

The system selects a valid bid according to the auction rules. Winning the opportunity does not guarantee that the person actually sees the ad, clicks or makes a purchase: these are different outcomes that must be measured separately.

Differences between Ad Exchange, DSP, SSP and RTB

These concepts are related, but perform different functions within programmatic advertising:

Ad Exchange: the technology marketplace that facilitates transactions between supply and demand.

DSP, Demand-Side Platform: allows buyers to manage campaigns, budgets and bids to access inventory from different sources.

SSP, Supply-Side Platform: helps publishers manage and sell inventory, set conditions and connect with buyers.

RTB, Real-Time Bidding: the real-time bidding mechanism used to auction advertising opportunities.

An Ad Exchange can therefore use RTB, but the terms are not synonyms. One describes an exchange platform and the other a way of making a purchase.

In practice, a single provider may combine SSP and Ad Exchange functions. The distinction helps explain their roles, although these do not always correspond to independent products.

Open and private auctions

In an open auction, buyers admitted by the platform can participate, subject to its policies and the seller’s restrictions.

In a private auction, the publisher limits participation to selected buyers. This allows more specific access conditions to be agreed, but does not in itself mean that inventory is reserved or that a purchase is guaranteed.

Google Ad Exchange is one example of this type of platform. Its inventory, auction and pricing management functions are integrated into Google Ad Manager.

Benefits and points to monitor

Ad Exchanges provide automated access to multiple advertising opportunities. They allow publishers to connect their inventory with different buyers and give advertisers more purchasing options.

That scale requires transaction quality to be reviewed. The following aspects are worth monitoring:

Transparency: knowing where ads appear and which intermediaries are involved.

Costs: distinguishing the inventory price from commissions and other charges.

Advertising fraud: detecting traffic or interactions that do not come from real users.

Brand safety: avoiding placements that conflict with the advertiser’s criteria.

Viewability: checking whether impressions meet the conditions to be considered viewable.

Automation facilitates the transaction, but does not replace inventory selection or the evaluation of results.

Definition: An Ad Exchange is a technology platform that facilitates the automated buying and selling of digital advertising impressions.
