Combinations such as
:-)
,
;-)
or
:(
use punctuation marks, letters and numbers to add an emotional cue to text.

The word emoticon blends the English terms emotion and icon. Although some applications turn these sequences into pictures, the original emoticon consists of characters that can be typed on a keyboard.

Origin of the emoticon

Typographic compositions resembling faces appeared in printed texts, but they gained a distinct conversational function with computer-mediated communication. One of the best-documented uses occurred on 19 September 1982 on an electronic bulletin board at Carnegie Mellon University.

In the message preserved by Carnegie Mellon, Scott Fahlman proposed
:-)
to mark humorous posts and
:-(
for those that were not jokes. The solution was intended to reduce misunderstandings in written conversations where participants could not see gestures or hear a voice.

As email, chat rooms and forums expanded, many conventional variants appeared. Numerous Western forms are interpreted by mentally tilting the head, while kaomoji such as
(^_^)
are read upright and often use more characters to represent eyes, a mouth and other details.

How an emoticon is constructed

Each character contributes one part of the represented expression. A colon can act as the eyes, a hyphen as the nose and a parenthesis as the mouth. Omitting the nose in
:)
does not change the principle: meaning emerges when the sequence is read as a unit.

Interpretation does not depend on shape alone. Emoticons work through shared conventions and context. A smile can convey friendliness, complicity or irony depending on the sentence, the relationship between participants and the customs of the community.

Their text format allows them to travel across very different systems, but it also creates visual limitations. A proportional font, line break or automatic substitution can alter the composition. Some platforms convert familiar sequences into graphics, while others retain them as unmodified text.

What emoticons are used for

Emoticons add paralinguistic information to messages that lack voice and body language. Their most common functions include:

Indicating tone: they help present a sentence as friendly, humorous, ironic or serious.

Expressing reactions: they represent happiness, sadness, surprise, doubt or anger with a short combination.

Qualifying messages: they can soften a correction or reinforce the emotional intention of a reply.

Creating complicity: particular groups develop their own forms, which act as recognisable codes.

They do not replace verbal content when precision matters. In notices, instructions or sensitive conversations, an ambiguous cue may be understood differently from the intended meaning. Netiquette conventions and the context of the channel help determine whether their use is appropriate.

Difference between an emoticon and an emoji

Emoticons, emojis and stickers can serve an expressive purpose, but they are different formats:

Emoticon: a combination of ordinary characters that forms an expression when read as a whole.

Emoji: a character or sequence encoded by Unicode and rendered through each provider’s graphic design.

Sticker: an image or animation file supplied by an application as an independent visual resource.

Automatically converting
:-)
into a graphic face changes its technical representation, even if a person perceives a similar intention. The original text can be copied as several characters; an emoji is transmitted through its Unicode encoding, and a sticker is sent as media content.

Use in digital communication

In social networks, community chats and customer service, emoticons help adjust the message register. A brand can use them when they fit its voice, channel and audience expectations, without assuming that they will increase attention or engagement on their own.

Their use raises several practical considerations:

Tone consistency: the same sequence may appear friendly in an informal conversation and inappropriate in a solemn communication.

Accessibility: screen readers may omit punctuation or voice it unnaturally, so essential information should remain in words.

Cultural interpretation: the orientation, frequency and meaning of an expression can vary between communities.

Automated analysis: a sentiment analysis system needs to consider the sequence together with the text instead of assigning it a fixed emotion.

Within digital marketing, an emoticon’s usefulness depends on the complete message. Controlled comparisons and qualitative review can assess its effect without confusing a stylistic choice with an automatic improvement in performance.

An emoticon combines text characters to represent an expression.
