On platforms such as WordPress, the communication uses XML-RPC and targets the linked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arimetrics.com\/en\/digital-glossary\/permalink\">permalink<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The receiving site checks that the source page contains the link and may record the notice as a special type of comment. A pingback acts as a <strong>verifiable notice<\/strong>: it does not manage backlinks, guarantee publication of the notice or change the value of the original link by itself.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Origin of pingbacks<\/h2>\n<p>Pingbacks emerged during the growth of blogging as a way to communicate references between posts without requiring their authors to send a manual notice. The mechanism belongs to the <strong>interconnected web<\/strong> of the early 2000s, when comments and links between blogs formed part of the same distributed conversation.<\/p>\n<p>WordPress still supports the mechanism and provides settings for sending and receiving notices. Its operation nevertheless depends on the sites retaining <strong>technical compatibility<\/strong>, enabling the relevant options and allowing the required XML-RPC requests.<\/p>\n<p>The concept is related to a trackback, but the two are not identical. A trackback is sent manually and includes an excerpt prepared by the source site; a pingback is <strong>automatic<\/strong>, and the receiver visits the linking page to confirm that the link exists.<\/p>\n<h2>Notification process<\/h2>\n<p>The process connects <strong>two pages<\/strong>, a source and a target, through their respective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arimetrics.com\/en\/digital-glossary\/url\">URLs<\/a>. Its usual sequence includes several checks:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Publication:<\/strong> the source site publishes a post containing a link to another page.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Detection:<\/strong> the system identifies the outgoing link and locates the target&#8217;s pingback service when available.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Delivery:<\/strong> the source sends the linking URL and linked URL through XML-RPC.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Verification:<\/strong> the receiver requests the source page and confirms that it contains a valid link to the target.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Record:<\/strong> when verification succeeds, the receiver creates a pingback notice associated with the content.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The check separates a valid notice from a request that points to a missing page or one that no longer links to the target. Even so, <strong>technical verification<\/strong> does not establish the editorial quality, authorship or intent of the source page.<\/p>\n<h2>Operating conditions<\/h2>\n<p>A normal link may exist without producing a pingback. Several <strong>operating conditions<\/strong> must coincide for the notification to appear:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sending enabled:<\/strong> the source site must attempt to notify the content it links to.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Receiving enabled:<\/strong> the target page must accept pingbacks or link notifications.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Protocol available:<\/strong> both systems must implement the mechanism and allow the required communication.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Identifiable target:<\/strong> the linked URL must correspond to content capable of receiving the notice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Verifiable link:<\/strong> the source page must be accessible and retain the reference to the target.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In WordPress, the general Discussion settings apply to new articles and can be overridden for an individual post. <strong>Self-pings<\/strong> may also be generated when one post links to another page on the same site, provided the configuration and link format permit the notice.<\/p>\n<h2>Relationship with SEO<\/h2>\n<p>The pingback and the link that triggers it are separate elements. The backlink already exists on the source page; the notification only informs the target and, if approved, may display a reference in its comments. It is therefore not a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arimetrics.com\/en\/digital-glossary\/linkbuilding\">linkbuilding<\/a> technique or a signal that guarantees <strong>higher rankings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether that reference is visible on the target depends on the comment system, moderation and theme. The displayed link may also include attributes such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arimetrics.com\/en\/digital-glossary\/nofollow-link\">nofollow<\/a>. A pingback alone does not demonstrate <strong>transferred authority<\/strong>, topical relevance or editorial endorsement.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic may occur if the notice is published and a person follows its link, but that outcome requires visibility and an actual reader action. A pingback does not automatically increase the post&#8217;s <strong>reach<\/strong> or turn an external reference into qualified traffic.<\/p>\n<h2>Moderation and limitations<\/h2>\n<p>Pingbacks are commonly managed alongside comments. Before displaying one publicly, both the automatic check and the <strong>editorial context<\/strong> of the reference can be assessed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Source:<\/strong> confirm that the linking page belongs to the site declared in the notice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Context:<\/strong> check whether the mention relates to the content and provides an understandable reference.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Duplicates:<\/strong> identify repeated notices, unwanted internal references and later changes to the source.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spam:<\/strong> moderate requests created to gain visibility, as with other actions performed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arimetrics.com\/en\/digital-glossary\/spammer\">spammer<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Availability:<\/strong> consider that verification may fail when the source blocks requests, responds slowly or becomes unavailable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A site can keep pingbacks, place them in moderation or disable them when they add no value to the conversation.
