The interface now uses the word post, but tweet remains widely used for both historical Twitter messages and current posts on X.

What a tweet contains

The main content of a tweet may be text, but it can also include links, images, videos, GIFs, polls and other elements supported by the platform. Standard posts allow up to 280 characters and retain short-form writing as a defining feature, while certain account types have access to longer formats.

Links use a URL shortened by X and take up a fixed length within the text count. Images and videos extend the message without behaving like conventional characters. A tweet can combine several resources within the limits that apply to its format and account.

Other elements provide context and connect the post with conversations on the platform:

Name and username: Identify the account that published the message.

Date: Places the content at the time when it was published.

Mentions: Include another account’s username preceded by
@
.

Hashtags: Connect the message with a word or phrase preceded by
#
.

Visible metrics: May show replies, reposts, quotes, likes or views.

Interactions with a tweet

People can interact with a post in several ways. Each interaction serves a different function within the conversation:

Reply: Adds a message linked to the tweet and becomes part of its conversation thread.

Repost: Shares the message with the user’s own audience. This function was previously called a retweet.

Quote: Shares the tweet together with a new comment.

Like: Records a reaction from the user’s account.

Bookmark: Saves the post privately for later reference.

A mention is not a private conversation. It may notify the account being mentioned, but it remains part of a post whose visibility depends on the author’s settings and access rules. Direct messages use a separate channel.

Tweet visibility

Visibility first depends on the type of account. Tweets from a public account can be viewed without following it and may appear in search, recommendations or conversations. With a protected account, access is limited to approved followers and additional restrictions apply to sharing its content.

The timeline does not necessarily display every post in chronological order. X may rank and recommend content using different signals, while users can also access alternative views. Consequently, publishing a tweet does not guarantee that every follower will see it.

Replies, mentions, reposts and quotes extend the contexts in which a post may appear. Distribution also depends on relationships between accounts, privacy settings, estimated interest and the platform’s moderation decisions.

Professional uses of tweets

Organizations use tweets to announce news, answer enquiries, cover events in real time, share content or participate in public conversations. The format also allows several related posts to be arranged as a thread when an explanation needs more detail.

Hashtags can provide thematic context, but adding them does not guarantee reach. Their usefulness depends on their relationship to the message and on how people search for or follow a conversation.

Evaluation may combine impressions, interactions, video views, clicks and replies, depending on the purpose of the post. A single metric does not explain the outcome by itself; it should be related to the content, the audience reached and the intended action.

A tweet is a post on Twitter, now X.
