The cost may be determined through an auction, an agreed rate or other platform rules.

PPC does not describe a particular channel. It can be used in search, display, social media, marketplace and other advertising environments. Nor does it mean that every advertisement in a campaign is charged per click, as the same platform may offer models based on impressions, views, conversions or other actions.

Pay-per-click features

The advertiser defines an objective, audience, advertising assets and budget. Depending on the platform, they may also select keywords, placements, topics, demographic information or behavioural signals.

CPC, or cost per click, may be fixed or variable. In auction systems, the amount and the opportunity to display the advertisement depend on factors such as the bid, quality, relevance, context and competition. Paying more does not by itself guarantee the first position or a conversion.

How PPC ads work

When an advertising opportunity occurs, the platform determines which advertisements meet the criteria and the order in which they may appear. In search, the query and keywords can contribute to that decision. In display or social media, the audience, content, placement and available signals also matter.

The click normally leads to a landing page, store, form or conversation. The campaign should measure not only clicks but also visit quality, conversions, cost per outcome and revenue where possible. Attribution may be limited by consent, devices, browsers and measurement windows.

Advantages of PPC

When configuration and measurement are appropriate, the model can provide several advantages:

Investment control: Budgets, bids and limits can be set, although delivery and billing rules vary between platforms.

Rapid activation: An approved campaign can begin obtaining impressions and clicks without waiting for organic visibility to develop.

Targeting: Queries, locations, audiences, devices, schedules and other supported signals can be combined.

Measurement and adjustment: Delivery data can be used to compare advertisements, audiences and landing pages when making decisions.

These advantages do not guarantee immediate profitability. A campaign may generate traffic without producing sales or may attract low-quality clicks if its targeting, proposition or post-click experience is unsuitable.

Pay-per-click challenges

Managing paid media campaigns with a PPC model also presents difficulties that need to be controlled:

Competition and costs: Pressure from other advertisers and campaign quality can increase the cost required to obtain results.

Continuous management: Budgets, bids, terms, audiences, creative assets and landing pages require regular review.

Fraud and invalid traffic: Filtering systems reduce some abusive or accidental clicks but do not remove every risk.

Incomplete measurement: Platform figures do not always match website analytics or demonstrate causality or genuine incrementality.

Most-used PPC platforms

Many advertising platforms support campaigns charged per click, although they also offer other models. Well-known examples include:

Google Ads: It includes advertising in search, partner sites, applications, video and other inventory.

Microsoft Advertising: It manages advertisements across Microsoft search properties and partner networks.

Meta Ads: It enables advertising on Facebook, Instagram and other placements in the Meta ecosystem.

LinkedIn Ads: It provides campaigns aimed at professional and business audiences.

The choice should not be based solely on cost per click. Audience presence, the objective, inventory quality, measurement capability and the value obtained after the click also matter.

Definition: PPC, or pay per click, is an advertising charging model in which the advertiser pays when a person clicks their advertisement.
