It may include processing capacity, memory, storage, connectivity and administration tools within infrastructure operated by a provider or by the organisation itself.

Hosting is neither the website nor its address. Its role is to keep the files, databases and processes available when someone requests a page or uses an application. The specific resources and responsibilities depend on the type of hosting and the service agreement.

How web hosting works

When a browser requests a URL, the DNS system directs the request to the infrastructure that serves the site. The server processes the request and returns the HTML, images, styles, scripts or other required data. A CDN may distribute copies of certain resources from locations closer to each user.

A hosting service may run a web server, programming languages, databases, email, certificates and backups. Not every plan includes or manages the same components: in some services, the provider operates much of the system; in others, the customer configures and maintains the environment.

Hosting, domain, server and DNS

These concepts are involved in publishing a website, but they are not interchangeable:

Hosting: the service that allocates resources and operation to keep a site or application available.

Domain: a registered name, such as example.com, that provides a readable Internet address. It is explained further in the domain entry.

Server: a physical or virtual system that processes requests and provides resources to other computers or programs.

DNS: the system that connects a domain with the addresses and services that should respond.

A domain can be registered before hosting is purchased, and a hosting environment can operate before a public domain is connected. For a website to be available through its usual name, the DNS configuration needs to point to the correct infrastructure.

Types of hosting

Hosting categories describe how resources are allocated and managed. Their boundaries can vary between providers, so a plan name alone does not define its architecture.

Shared hosting: several customers use resources within the same system. It reduces administration and cost but offers less isolation and control.

VPS hosting: a physical server is divided into virtual environments with separate resources and configuration. It provides more control than shared hosting.

Dedicated hosting: one machine is allocated to one customer. It allows greater control over the system but requires more administration.

Cloud hosting: resources are supplied by distributed infrastructure that may make it easier to expand capacity and tolerate failures. It belongs to the wider field of cloud computing.

Managed hosting: the provider handles defined configuration, update, monitoring or security tasks. It can apply to shared, VPS, dedicated or cloud environments.

Specialised hosting: tools and configuration are adapted to a particular technology or use, such as WordPress, ecommerce or enterprise applications.

Free hosting can be suitable for tests or limited projects, but it is not a separate architecture. Its restrictions on resources, support, advertising, domains or continuity need to be reviewed before it is used for a public service.

Web hosting resources and responsibilities

A plan may limit CPU, memory, storage, data transfer, simultaneous processes, databases or accounts. Terms such as “unlimited” are usually subject to usage policies and do not remove technical limits. Performance also depends on the software, caching, network distance and demand placed on the site.

Availability and security involve shared responsibilities. The provider protects and operates the part defined by the service, while the owner remains responsible for the code, credentials, permissions, updates and data under its control. Backups should be assessed by their frequency, retention, location and proven ability to restore the service.

Data location, subprocessors and portability terms may also matter. Moving to another provider requires the ability to retrieve files, databases, configuration and logs without depending on a single proprietary tool.

How to host a website

The process varies according to the technology, but it usually includes these stages:

Define requirements: identify the technology, expected traffic, storage, location, security, support and growth needs.

Choose the hosting model: select the level of resources, isolation and management suitable for the project.

Prepare and deploy the application: configure the environment and publish files, code and databases through the control panel, a repository or the available deployment tools.

Connect the domain: update the DNS records and activate the HTTPS certificate where applicable.

Verify and maintain: test operation, monitoring, backup restoration, updates and web performance.

The decision should not rely only on price or a single storage figure. The application architecture, support quality, scaling options, security terms and ease of migration determine whether the service is suitable.

Definition: Web hosting is a service that provides the resources needed to store and serve a website, application or its data over the Internet.
