It can appear within a message or at the end, when the platform supports this feature.

For example, #DigitalMarketing combines the words of an expression into a single label. It is not equivalent to an @ mention, which usually points to a specific account. The characters allowed and the behavior of the link depend on each service; not every combination of symbols after # forms a valid hashtag.

Clicking or searching for a hashtag may display posts that use it, but not necessarily all of them. Account privacy, moderation, content availability and the platform’s search criteria affect the results. Adding a hashtag does not make a private post public either.

Hashtags as a tool for discussion

Hashtags connect posts about an event, campaign or topic, even when their authors do not follow one another. They are not used only in unmoderated forums, nor do they create a separate discussion space by themselves: activity remains subject to the platform’s features and rules.

A hashtag can help locate comments about a conference, share community resources or identify contributions to an initiative. This grouping does not imply that all participants share an opinion or that their messages represent society as a whole.

Meaning develops through context and usage. The same hashtag can serve different purposes or bring together unrelated conversations. Whoever proposes a hashtag can explain its intended purpose, but does not automatically control every post that includes it.

In communication and marketing, hashtags can help track a conversation. However, counting tagged posts is not equivalent to measuring unique people, total reach, support for a brand or sales. Part of the conversation may take place without using the hashtag.

Popular hashtags

A frequently used hashtag may gain visibility, but its volume does not guarantee that it will appear as a trending topic. On X, trends are determined by algorithmic criteria and may vary according to the user’s location, interests and settings. The number of posts is one factor, not the only one.

A trending topic does not have to be written as a hashtag either: it may appear as a word or expression without the hash symbol. Hashtags and trends are therefore related, but not equivalent, concepts. A hashtag with ongoing activity may not be a current trend.

Using a hashtag generally does not require someone to reserve it in a hashtag registry. This does not grant exclusive rights to the expression or remove moderation rules or potential third-party rights. Platforms may restrict searches for, or the distribution of, content associated with certain hashtags.

Popularity can be short-lived and vary between services. A hashtag’s prominence on one network does not demonstrate the same usage on another or guarantee wider distribution for every post that includes it. Interpreting a conversation also requires attention to its content, time period and context, not just the message counter.

Definition: A hashtag is a label formed by the hash symbol (#) followed by a word or expression without spaces, used on social networking and microblogging services to identify topics and make related posts easier to find.
