It connects customers, business locations, competitors, campaigns and territories to examine how space influences a commercial decision.

Information is usually represented through digital maps or geographic information systems. These resources reveal patterns that are harder to see in a table, such as customer concentrations, a store’s catchment area or differences in performance among locations.

How geomarketing works

Analysis begins by selecting an appropriate geographic unit: an address, radius, postal code, municipality, commercial area or region. Data for that unit is combined with business, population, mobility or behavioral variables.

Geolocation provides the position of a device, person or asset when a valid source is available. Geomarketing uses that information with other data to analyze markets, segment territories or activate marketing actions.

The discipline developed from commercial cartography and demographic studies into systems that integrate databases, maps, mobile devices and campaign results. Greater precision does not remove the need to check the source, freshness and representativeness of the data.

Data used in geomarketing

Selection depends on the question being analyzed. Sources do not describe the same phenomena or provide the same level of precision.

First-party locations: Addresses of stores, offices, service points, warehouses or delivery areas.

Customer locations: Declared addresses, postal codes or aggregated areas associated with purchases, registrations or inquiries.

Territorial variables: Population, economic activity, sociodemographic characteristics, accessibility and competitor presence.

Device signals: Positions obtained through GPS, networks, IP addresses, applications or beacons, with different permissions and levels of accuracy.

Performance data: Sales, visits, clicks, conversions, costs and other metrics associated with a campaign or location.

Addresses, periods and geographic units should be normalized before sources are combined. A geocoding error or a sample concentrated among particular users can produce maps that look precise but support inaccurate conclusions.

Geomarketing techniques

Geomarketing includes both territorial analysis and activation mechanisms. Techniques differ according to the information used and the point at which they operate.

Geographic segmentation: Groups audiences or results by country, region, city, postal code or other areas.

Geotargeting: Adapts advertising or content according to a current, declared or inferred location and other targeting criteria.

Geofencing: Defines a virtual boundary to detect, where technology and permissions allow it, when a device enters or leaves an area.

Catchment areas: Estimate where a location’s customers or users come from and which factors influence its reach.

Coverage analysis: Compares demand, competition and service points to identify overlaps or underserved territories.

These techniques may use historical data, near-real-time information or modeled estimates. An estimated presence or movement does not necessarily represent a verified visit or purchase intention.

Applications of geomarketing

An organization can use geomarketing to study where to open or close a location, define sales territories, adapt an offer among areas or plan the distribution of resources. Maps also help compare the performance of a physical network and identify places with potential demand.

In digital advertising, location may contribute to campaign targeting or message adaptation. A person’s presence within an area does not by itself demonstrate that they belong to the target audience. Location should be combined with context and relevant targeting criteria.

Geomarketing can also analyze events, mobility, service coverage and the response to local promotions. The usual output is not an automatic decision, but a territorial representation for comparing alternatives and developing hypotheses.

Geomarketing and local SEO

Geomarketing and local SEO both use geographic information, but their scope is different. Local SEO seeks to improve an organization’s presence in search results connected with a location. Geomarketing is a broader framework for territorial analysis and activation.

Geographic data can help determine which locations need specific pages or information, where demand exists and how a network of business locations is organized. It does not turn proximity or advertising targeting into controllable organic ranking factors.

For a physical location, consistent addresses, opening hours, categories and other public information remain necessary. Geomarketing can provide context for prioritizing actions, while organic performance requires search and local visibility data.

Privacy and limitations

Location data may reveal habits, journeys and sensitive places. Its collection and use should serve a defined purpose, have an appropriate basis and limit access, retention and detail to what is necessary.

Aggregation and anonymization reduce risk, but do not guarantee that a dataset cannot be associated with individuals again. The more precise and prolonged a sequence of locations becomes, the more capable it is of identifying individual patterns.

Analysis is also constrained by source coverage, technical accuracy and the method used to attribute an outcome. A correlation between an area and a behavior does not establish causation. Conclusions should be considered alongside business data, research and knowledge of the territory.

Geomarketing applies geographic data to marketing analysis and activation.
