The subscription becomes active only after the second action has been completed.

This mechanism is used mainly in email marketing to check that the mailbox exists and that whoever controls it confirms the request. It is also known as confirmed opt-in. It does not necessarily identify a person or, by itself, make every subsequent message lawful.

How double opt-in works

The process separates the initial request from its confirmation. During this interval, the address remains pending and should not be treated as a confirmed subscription.

Request: the person enters an address in a form and accepts the stated scope of the subscription.

Pending status: the system records the request without yet activating the contact for the intended messages.

Confirmation message: an email is sent with a unique link or code, normally with a limited validity period.

Confirmation: the person uses the link or code from the mailbox that was entered.

Activation: the system changes the contact’s status to confirmed and retains a record of the process.

If the second action does not take place, the address remains pending or is deleted according to the applicable retention policy. The confirmation message forms part of the signup; it is not the same as a later promotional campaign.

Differences from other permission mechanisms

Double opt-in is related to other concepts but does not replace them:

Opt-in: the affirmative action through which a person requests or accepts a communication. It may be completed in a single step.

Double opt-in: adds confirmation through the stated channel before activating the subscription.

Opt-out: allows someone to refuse communications or end an active subscription.

Permission marketing: a broader approach based on obtaining and maintaining a valid expectation or authorization to communicate through a particular channel and within a defined scope.

A list can combine these mechanisms: signup through double opt-in, subsequent preference management, and an unsubscribe option in every message. Initial confirmation does not remove the right to withdraw consent or preserve authorization indefinitely after its context has changed.

Benefits and limitations

The second action provides additional signals about the origin and technical quality of a signup:

Mailbox control: it shows that someone with access to the address received the message and used the confirmation mechanism.

Fewer errors: it avoids activating mistyped addresses that cannot receive the confirmation email.

Fewer unauthorized or automated signups: it makes it harder to add an address without access to the mailbox, although it does not replace other abuse controls.

Stronger traceability: it allows the initial request and subsequent confirmation to be recorded separately.

The method also has limitations that should be interpreted correctly:

Additional friction: some people who complete the form do not finish the confirmation step.

Delivery problems: filters, delays, or provider errors may prevent the message from arriving.

Partial verification: it confirms control of the mailbox at that moment, not the person’s civil identity or the address’s continuing validity.

No guaranteed outcome: it does not ensure opens, engagement, deliverability, or future commercial interest.

Comparing single and double opt-in therefore requires considering both record quality and the signups lost during confirmation.

Consent and regulatory compliance

Double opt-in can help demonstrate how and when a subscription was confirmed, but it is not a universal legal requirement or an automatic guarantee of compliance. The applicable obligation depends on the jurisdiction, recipient, purpose, prior relationship, and legal basis used.

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office explains in its electronic mail marketing guidance that messages to individuals generally require specific consent, with a limited soft opt-in for certain existing-customer relationships. It also requires a valid way to opt out. The guidance does not make a two-step confirmation mandatory in every case.

Where processing relies on consent, the record should make it possible to show that the choice was informed, specific, and withdrawable. A confirmation click does not correct an ambiguous form, a hidden purpose, a pre-ticked box, or a later expansion of data use.

Recording and evaluating the process

The audit trail normally brings together the elements needed to reconstruct a signup without retaining more data than necessary:

Request source: the form, page, application, or integration where the process began.

Information version: the wording and preferences shown at the time.

Request date: the moment when the form was submitted.

Confirmation: the date, status, and technical reference of the link or code used.

Subsequent changes: preference updates, withdrawal of permission, or unsubscribe action.

Retention: the period and rule applied to addresses that remain pending.

Several metrics can be used to evaluate how the process operates:

Confirmation rate: the proportion of requests that complete the second step.

Confirmation time: the interval between the form submission and activation.

Delivery errors: confirmation messages that bounce or are not delivered.

Complaints and unsubscribes: later signs that recipients’ expectations did not match the messages.

List quality: valid addresses and observed activity, without treating them as legal proof.

These measures can reveal confusing forms, undelivered messages, or poorly explained subscription promises. Evaluation should distinguish confirmation problems from the relevance and frequency of later campaigns.

What double opt-in is, how two-step subscription confirmation works, its benefits and limitations, and how it differs from opt-in and opt-out.

[1371,281
post-20342","encyclopedia","type-encyclopedia","status-publish","hentry","encyclopedia-tag-email-consent","encyclopedia-tag-privacidad-en
["GET
