It lets people browse a selected collection of links by topic, location, activity or other criteria, and may include an internal search function for finding its listings.

It is not the same as a search engine. A directory displays a defined collection classified through a taxonomy, while a search engine crawls and indexes documents to answer queries through its own retrieval and ranking systems.

How a web directory works

How a directory works depends on its editorial and technical model. It may accept submissions from website owners, add resources selected by editors or import data from authorized sources. The process usually includes these stages:

Acquisition: the website is submitted, discovered or imported from a data source.

Review: the directory checks that the resource exists, fits its scope and provides the required information.

Classification: categories, location, tags and other attributes are assigned to support browsing.

Publication and maintenance: the listing appears with its link and description and should be updated or removed when it is no longer valid.

Selection may be manual, automated or hybrid. Human review is not required for a service to qualify as a directory, although it can help control duplicates, incorrect categories and outdated listings.

Types of web directories

Directories can be classified by their scope, listing process and access model:

General or subject-specific: general directories cover a range of topics, while subject directories focus on an industry, discipline or type of resource.

Global, national or local: these limit listings by country, region or city. Local business directories may support visibility, but they do not replace a local SEO strategy.

Editorial, open-submission or hybrid: a team selects entries, website owners can submit them, or the two processes are combined.

Free or paid: a listing may be free, require a review fee or include advertising options. Payment alone does not establish quality or SEO value.

Reciprocal or non-reciprocal: some directories request a return link. A mandatory or excessive exchange should be judged by its usefulness, not treated as a ranking guarantee.

A blogroll is a list of recommended blogs or links, while a vertical portal brings together content and services for a specialized field. Both may share features with a directory, but they are not equivalent concepts.

History of web directories

Directories became prominent during the early years of the Web, when browsing categories was a common way to discover websites. Yahoo began in 1994 as a hierarchical guide to web pages, and DMOZ launched in 1998 as a project maintained by volunteer editors.

The expansion of search engines reduced their role as the main gateway to the Web. Yahoo Directory closed in 2014 and DMOZ in 2017, although DMOZ’s structure continued through Curlie. Directories did not disappear: they are still used in business, academic, institutional and specialist settings where a defined, classified collection can be useful.

Web directories and SEO

For years, directory submissions were used as a link building tactic. A listing may help a relevant audience discover a business or resource, but its link does not automatically improve rankings. Its effect depends on context, relevance, editorial selection and the overall quality of the website.

Google’s spam policies include links from low-quality directory or bookmark sites and excessive link exchanges among examples of link spam. This does not make every directory a link farm, but it does discourage mass submissions whose main purpose is to manipulate ranking signals.

How to assess a web directory

Before using or recommending a directory, consider the following criteria:

Purpose and audience: it should clearly state whom it serves and which resources it accepts.

Relevance: categories and listings should match the stated topic or geographical scope.

Admission criteria: the directory should explain how it reviews submissions, advertising and potential conflicts of interest.

Listing quality: descriptions, contact details and destinations should be useful, accurate and current.

Link patterns: indiscriminate listings, spam-filled categories, forced anchor text and reciprocal schemes with no user value are warning signs.

A useful directory is defined by the quality of its classification and listings, not simply by the number of links it contains or whether it charges a fee.

Examples of web directories

These examples represent different periods and uses of the format:

Yahoo Directory: a historical catalog launched in 1994 and closed in 2014, organized through a hierarchy of categories.

DMOZ: an open, multilingual directory launched in 1998, maintained by a community of editors and closed in 2017.

Hotfrog: a business directory that organizes company profiles by activity and location.

Definition: A web directory is a catalog of websites or online resources organized into categories, subcategories and descriptive records.
