It can include open inventory, private deals and guaranteed transactions with an agreed price and volume. It is used in display, video, audio, connected television and digital out-of-home advertising, among other environments.

How programmatic buying works

The process connects the inventory supplied by media owners with demand from advertisers and agencies. Although the architecture varies by channel and deal, an impression commonly passes through these stages:

An advertising opportunity is generated: a website, app or other medium requests an advertisement when space is available.

Permitted signals are sent: the request may include page or app context, format, device, approximate location, deal conditions and available audience signals with the corresponding legal basis or consent.

The impression is evaluated: buying platforms compare the opportunity with campaign targeting, budget, frequency, creative and other rules.

An offer is selected: allocation may be resolved through an auction, a negotiated price or a guaranteed reservation.

The advertisement is served and recorded: the winning creative is delivered to the medium and systems collect events for billing, control and measurement.

These automated exchanges are generally completed while the content loads. An Ad Server takes part in creative delivery, tracking and rotation, but it does not replace the platforms used to buy or sell inventory.

Programmatic buying methods

Automation can be combined with different degrees of access, negotiation and guarantee:

Open auction: several buyers compete for available impressions. When each opportunity is decided in real time, the process uses RTB.

Private marketplace: a group of invited buyers can access inventory and terms that the publisher does not offer in the open auction.

Preferred deal: buyer and seller agree a price and preferential access but generally do not guarantee a specific impression volume.

Programmatic guaranteed: the parties agree the price, inventory, dates and volume, while technology automates the reserved transaction.

These methods do not form a single scale of quality. A private deal may provide greater control over the media environment, while an open auction may offer broader reach. The method also affects availability, transparency and how cost is determined.

Participants and platforms

The programmatic chain can bring together several specialist systems. Not every transaction requires every intermediary:

Advertiser and agency: define objectives, budget, audiences, creatives, frequency limits and quality criteria.

DSP: enables buyers to evaluate inventory from different sources and submit offers according to campaign rules.

Publisher and SSP: the publisher supplies advertising space, while the SSP manages its availability, price floors and buyer access.

Ad Exchange: provides market infrastructure that connects supply and demand and resolves transactions. Its role is covered further under Ad Exchange.

Support services: verification, measurement, fraud prevention, consent management and data tools may participate depending on the setup.

The route followed by an impression is known as the supply path. A chain with many intermediaries can make costs and resellers harder to identify, so transparency depends on the information supplied by each participant and the standards they support.

Pricing and measurement

The price is not always equal to the buyer’s maximum bid. An auction can take into account its pricing model, competing offers, the publisher’s floor price, deal rules and platform fees. Direct or guaranteed transactions may instead use a negotiated fixed price.

CPM is commonly used to express cost per thousand impressions, but it does not describe campaign results by itself. Evaluation may combine:

Delivery: impressions served, reach, frequency and spend.

Inventory quality: viewability, context, ad placement, invalid traffic and suitability of the medium.

Response: clicks, video plays, visits, conversions and other defined actions.

Efficiency: CPM, cost per outcome, attributed value and differences between advertiser spend and publisher revenue.

Metrics come from different systems and may vary because of attribution, time windows, deduplication or filtering. Programmatic buying automates decisions and transactions, but it does not remove these measurement differences.

Benefits and limitations

Programmatic buying expands the operational capacity of digital advertising, although its results depend on the quality of data, inventory and controls:

Scale and speed: large volumes of opportunities can be assessed across multiple media owners and formats.

Rule-based decisions: budget, context, audience, frequency and creative can inform each decision.

Continuous optimization: allocation can change according to delivery and observed campaign results.

Limited transparency: fees, resellers and complex supply paths can obscure how much is paid and where the advertisement appears.

Quality and safety: fraud, low viewability, unsuitable placements and spoofed domains require verification and brand controls.

Privacy: the use of identifiers and audience signals is constrained by regulation, consent, platform policies and data availability.

Display advertising is one of its established uses, but the concepts are not equivalent: display describes an advertising format, while programmatic describes a trading method that can also be used in other channels.

Programmatic buying automates digital advertising purchases.
