The role sets its priorities, directs its resources and connects decisions about brand, markets, customers and demand with the organisation’s wider objectives.

The scope of the position depends on the company’s size, industry and structure. In some organisations it covers all marketing activity; in others it shares responsibilities with sales, product, customer experience, communications or ecommerce. The CMO commonly works directly with the CEO and belongs to the senior management team.

CMO responsibilities

The CMO translates business strategy into marketing priorities and decides how internal and external capabilities should work together. Responsibilities may include:

Strategy and positioning: defines priority markets, the value proposition, segments, objectives and criteria for differentiating the offer.

Market and customer insight: organises research, interprets changes in demand and uses the customer journey to identify needs and friction.

Brand and communications: establishes branding principles, coordinates messages and oversees consistency across touchpoints.

Demand, channels and go-to-market activity: aligns campaigns, content, channels, pricing and launches with sales and product without attributing to marketing outcomes that depend on several teams.

People, budget and partners: develops the team, allocates resources and oversees relationships with suppliers, consultants or a digital marketing agency.

A CMO’s role is not limited to approving campaigns. It involves prioritising, coordinating and evaluating the marketing system, even when specialist managers handle day-to-day execution.

Relationship with senior management

The CMO’s ability to act depends on coordination with other functions:

CEO and corporate strategy: translates company priorities into market, brand and growth decisions and contributes customer and competitor evidence to executive planning.

Sales, product, customer service and finance: agrees segments, propositions, forecasts, launches, experience and criteria for evaluating marketing’s contribution.

Technology, data, operations and legal teams: coordinates platforms, integrations, privacy, consent, automation and risks associated with data use.

Digital transformation is not solely the CMO’s responsibility. The role may lead its application to marketing, but architecture, security, operations and governance decisions need shared ownership and clear accountability.

Marketing measurement and governance

No single metric describes CMO performance. Measurement needs to connect marketing activity with objectives and distinguish outcomes, contributions and external factors:

Brand and customer: awareness, consideration, preference, satisfaction, retention or changes in experience, using methods appropriate to each metric.

Demand and business: opportunities, adoption, influenced sales, segment growth or customer value without presenting correlation as causation.

Efficiency: acquisition cost, channel performance, budget use and initiative returns where attribution is sufficiently reliable.

Quality and control: consistent definitions, traceability, permissions, consent and limitations of the data used in analysis.

Data-driven marketing helps test decisions against evidence, but data does not remove the need for judgement. Attribution models, platforms and surveys provide partial views and can produce misleading conclusions when their sources or definitions are not comparable.

CMO profile and role evolution

A CMO needs to combine market knowledge, strategic ability, leadership, communication, financial understanding and sound judgement about technology and data. Relevant experience varies by context: an international company, a digital business and an industrial organisation do not require exactly the same background.

There is no universal qualification or minimum number of years required for the role. Education in marketing, business, communications, economics, technology or another field may be useful, but it needs to be assessed alongside experience, team leadership and the level of responsibility previously held.

Job titles are not equivalent in every organisation. A marketing director may perform duties similar to those of a CMO in one company, while in another the director has a more operational remit and reports to the CMO. Understanding the position requires reviewing its authority, budget, team and decision-making scope rather than its title alone.

Definition: A CMO (chief marketing officer) is the senior executive responsible for an organisation’s marketing function.
