A plan organises initiatives, resources and timing to apply that strategy. A campaign is a coordinated unit within this framework, with an objective and scope that allow it to be managed and evaluated.

A tactic is a particular action or method used by the campaign, such as publishing an item, sending a communication, holding an event or activating advertising. One objective may require several tactics and channels, but using many formats does not by itself make a set of actions a coherent campaign.

Campaigns commonly have start and end dates, although some remain active for extended periods. In these cases, review conditions, phase changes or evaluation intervals are needed to distinguish their development from permanent activity.

Campaign components

The components need to maintain a verifiable relationship between the intended result, the people being addressed and the actions being carried out. They commonly include:

Objective: The specific result that justifies the campaign and the conditions used to assess its achievement.

Audience: The target audience, segments, needs and exclusions relevant to the initiative.

Proposition and message: The main idea, information or action to be communicated, adapted to the context without concealing important conditions.

Channels and formats: The owned, earned or paid media and assets required to deliver the campaign.

Schedule and resources: Dates, budget, materials, dependencies and available capacity.

Responsibilities: The people responsible for approval, execution, supervision and responding to incidents.

Measurement: The baseline, targets, KPIs, data sources and comparison criteria defined before results are interpreted.

These elements do not have to be stored in one tool, but they need to be understandable and kept current when the scope changes.

Campaign management

Execution may be divided into preparation, launch, monitoring, adjustment and closure. Changing a campaign while it is running is not necessarily an error, provided that the changes, their reasons and their effect on comparisons are documented.

Metrics need to correspond to the objective. Reach, deliveries, views or impressions describe exposure; clicks and interactions describe initial responses; registrations, sales or other conversions represent subsequent outcomes defined by the organisation.

A conversion attributed to a campaign does not by itself demonstrate that the campaign caused the result. Other touchpoints, prior demand, commercial changes or external factors may also contribute. Evaluation needs to consider costs, result quality, unintended effects and differences between platforms alongside the main metrics.

Closure provides an opportunity to compare execution with the objective and record reusable lessons. A campaign may miss its target and still provide useful information; similarly, exceeding an indicator does not demonstrate that every component worked correctly.

Campaign measurement

UTM parameters are labels added to a URL to classify visits from particular links in analytics tools. They help identify tagged traffic but do not replace campaign planning or solve attribution by themselves.

In Google Analytics,
utm_source
identifies the source,
utm_medium
the medium and
utm_campaign
the campaign.
utm_content
can distinguish assets or links, while
utm_term
records the manual term traditionally used for paid search keywords. It does not mean subcampaign.

A URL might contain:

www.domain.com?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=summer&utm_content=primary_button

Names need to follow a consistent convention to prevent differences in spelling from fragmenting data. Values remain visible in the URL and may be stored by several tools, so they should not contain personal or sensitive information.

The official Google Analytics documentation contains the current parameters and requirements for manual tagging.

Definition: A campaign is a coordinated set of actions and messages developed to achieve a defined objective within a particular scope, audience and period or context.
